Similar Photos: comparing the photo library to group repeated shots

The problem

Nobody takes one photo any more. You take five of the same thing, keep meaning to pick the good one, and never do. Exact-duplicate detection will not catch these, because every frame is a slightly different file.

What makes it different

This runs on capture time, dimensions and file size rather than a machine-learning model, which is what keeps it entirely on-device with nothing extra to download. It is deliberately a grouping aid, not a visual analysis, and the app does not claim otherwise.

How it works

  1. Photos are compared on capture time, image dimensions and file size.

  2. Shots taken within a few seconds of each other are grouped as a burst.

  3. Photos of the same scene taken further apart, but nearly identical in size and dimensions, are grouped as repeated takes.

  4. Each group shows what it is wasting, and you choose which frame to keep before anything is removed.
